OCSL All-star Teams Perform Well December 05, 04
The OCSL U-10 All-star team earned 2nd Place at the State Tournament in early December 2004. The team (coached by Dan Panfil, Joel Smith, and Gary Bardizbanian) made it to the Championship Game, but despite playing their best game of the tournament, they were outscored by the team from Dublin.
Previously, the OCSL U-10 All-star teams had finished 1st and 2nd in the regional tournament held in Madison. The OCSL U-12 All-star team put forth a good effort at the regional tournament, but fell short of their goal to reach the state event.
The OCSL sends its congratulations to each and every player and coach for their excellent performances this season!

Georgia Soccer Day (Saturday Jan 31, 2004 Atlanta GA) December 23, 03
- Information about Georgia Soccer Day, January 31, is now available on the GaSoccer website. http://www.gasoccer.org/gasoccerday/index.htm
This year they are trying something new by designing
seminars and workshops with specific audiences in mind. Of special
interest are the workshops designed just for parents . . . to educate and
provide information about youth soccer, our leagues and programs and more.
Other groups that are targeted include coaches, administrators, team
managers and referees.
This is an excellent opportunity provided by GYSA for anyone to take advantage of these "free" workshops to learn more about soccer.
Have a safe and happy holiday season.

Late Registration Deadline (Dec 15th) November 22, 03
- It's not too late to Register for our Spring 2004 Soccer Season, our Late Registration Deadline will be Dec 15th. Forms are available on this website, WBW Rec Dept, Old Capitol Trophy, and American Fast Photo. Any forms received after the Dec 15th deadline will be placed on a waiting list based on team availability.
- Our Spring 2004 season will start earlier next year for two reasons 1) we need some additional bank time in our game schedule to accommodate for "rain outs",last year we did not have this time therefore many teams played a short season 2) we need to finish up prior to start of baseball and softball season.
- Our official Spring 2004 Soccer Game Schedule will begin as planned for U6-U12 on Saturday Feb 7th 2004. All U6-U12 games will finish up no later than Saturday March 27, 2004. Spring season games shall be scheduled for Thursday and Saturday, any required make-up games due to bad weather will be scheduled for Monday or Tuesday.
- I need your help spreading the word about Spring Registration Deadline, this process becomes very cumbersome when 70% of the League Registers Late(this is what happened in the Fall). We had many complaints about moving the deadline up this year but it had to be done to start the Spring 2004 Season on schedule.
- Our Mandatory Coaches Meeting for Spring 2004 will be Thursday Jan 15th 2004. AT this meeting each coach will receive an updated team roster, game schedule, and sign-up for practice fields.
- For traveling soccer teams (U13 Athena, U14 Rec, U15 Challenge, U16 Challenge) we need each of the traveling team coaches to provide Sherri Smith with your updated player roster by Jan 15th 2004.

New OCSL Soccer Field Complex September 11, 03
Curtis Yaun, David Sheppard, Rick Fathi, John Tighe, Robert Parr, Patrick Donovan and two Georgia Power Reps (Rusty Thompson and Larry Peterson) met Wednesday morning (Sept 17th) with Joan Minton, Dale Epps, and a few other county employees overseeing the new soccer field project. As it stands, the project will take three years (into 2006) to complete based on the county's money situation and availability of county resources. To bid everything out, the total cost would be around $700,000; the county only has $500,000 budgeted to complete the soccer project. So, the county plans to use its own equipment and resources to grade the property, bringing the total cost back below the $500,000 budget. The current complex design includes a concession building, parking lot, irrigation, grass (sod) for five large soccer fields and possibly all the field lighting.
Three more years is a fairly long time to wait, especially considering we have already been waiting several years for this project to materialize. It has been suggested that if OCSL could locate any private company with heavy grading equipment that might be willing to help (volunteer their heavy equipment and resources), this would reduce the project completion estimate by about a year (2005). We would like to complete the grading by Spring 2004, which would allow a window to plant grass during the prime growing season, and then let the fields sit idle for a year to allow the grass to properly take root.
If the county were to bid out the grading, they estimate the project cost would increase by approximately $250,000. There's no money at the moment to bid anything out so this is not even an option. There aren't a lot of local organizations capable of moving this amount of dirt: CT Harris, Graham Construction, WF Jackson, the US Army Corps of Engineers, and Engelhard all have the heavy equipment to handle such a project. Engelhard is already out because of their current backlog status with land reclamation.
If you can provide any help with getting in touch with any of the above heavy equipment resources or maybe an alternate resource not mentioned, please call Patrick Donovan (454-3211).
To enhance player development, the GYSA is encouraging all leagues to implement a small-sided soccer philosophy for the U10 and U12 age groups. Smaller teams will require more scheduled practices and games. This new soccer complex would resolve our field constraint issues and provide opportunities to host future soccer tournaments here in Milledgeville.
OCSL Fund Raiser (Express Auto & Tire) August 30, 03
At the mandatory coaches meeting on August 14th, each coach was provided with "green forms" to pass out to each of their team players. These "green forms" will inform the parents that Old Capital Soccer League has been chosen to participate in a national youth soccer program by Uniroyal Tire and Express Auto & Tire. The program is designed to support community soccer leagues and their families by raising funds and supplying equipment.
To celebrate their 2003 Fall sponsorship of the Old Capital Soccer League, Express Auto & Tire and Uniroyal will provide free soccer balls (good while supplies last) and conduct a fundraising promotion for our league families. A donation of $4.00 per tire on all Uniroyal tires sold in September by Express Auto & Tire to the general public, will be presented to the league. Let's spread the word to make this fundraiser as successful as possible.
To find out more information on the Uniroyal Tire TOPSoccer Program, visit the Uniroyal website at www.uniroyal.com or the US Youth Soccer website at www.youthsoccer.org. To learn more about Express Auto & Tire, contact Charles Burrell at 478-453-8416 or exp@alltel.net.
